Week 1 Blog Assignment

For this week’s blog assignment, we were asked to think of someone who demonstrates competent communication within a particular context. I chose to think about the youth who come to my Youth Center. They range in age from 9 to 12 and they have some of the best communication skills I have ever encountered. They are always so honest with me as well as with one another. They are able to solve problems among one another before having to get a staff involved. I feel that as adults we have a tendency to become less honest because of the worry that comes with offending someone or hurting their feelings. It seems that children just want to be honest in communicating with others and this is very refreshing. Sometimes I do wish I could communicate as well as they do.

  2. It is so good to hear that our youth have such wonderful communication skills. It will truly help them so much along the way. As a second grade teacher, it is great to hear about children who are able to solve problems without getting others involved. We are still struggling with that skill in our class.

  3. Amanda,
I loved reading that your effective communicators were children. I think adults so often dismiss children as being able to effectively communicate. We learned in our last class how untrue this is. Thanks for the reminder.

  4. I am so excited to hear that these youth are able to solve problems on their own. Maybe adults need to take some lessons from them. I feel as if some adults are known to not talk out there problems but hold in all of their emotions.

  5. This is indeed a very unique post, Amanda! I agree with you that as adults, we sometimes censor much of what we want to really say because we are too scared to offend others. Indeed, talking with children can be very refreshing. Thanks for your post!
